PLANETSIDE

General Statement

First of all guys, I'm posting this in order to explain what exactly Planetside/Planetside2 is all about. For those of you that have been keeping up with the latest Planetside 2 news, you can skip this part. Basically, its pretty short and simple. It gets a lot of comparisons to Battlefield (especially 2142). However, the original Planetside came out about nine years ago and it thrived for a solid 5 years. The saga is an MMOFPS (Massive Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter) and is epic on so many scales. The first one had its problem with memory leaks and computers not being able to handle it, keep in mind that was nine years ago. The game features tactics unlike no other. The only other game I could compare it to strategy wise is source soccer, because our game is so unique as well. The game is uniquely in-depth and has many opportunities for different play styles. In this breakdown we will learn about the original Planetside and carry in to Planetside 2. Enjoy guys.

The Beginning of Planetside
(Taken From Planetside WIKI, feel free to read - if not skip to next part... Pay special attention to faction section)

PlanetSide is a massively-multiplayer online first-person-shooter computer game published by Sony Online Entertainment and released on May 20, 2003.

PlanetSide chronicles the efforts of three factions as they fight for territorial control over ten different continents on the planet Auraxis. Players take on the role of individual soldiers fighting for one of the three factions within the game, and can specialize in various fields such as combat vehicle crewman, infantry, invisible infiltrator or a variety of combat support roles such as combat medic or combat engineer. The game is played primarily in a first person perspective, with the option of third-person.

Unlike most shooting games, in which small-scale matches take place in essentially an instanced map, PlanetSide battles can involve hundreds of players in a single fight. PlanetSide battles concern control over territory and strategic points, and can cause repercussions to all three factions. To date, PlanetSide remains one of the few MMOFPS games ever created.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Plot

After exploring through a deep space wormhole, the Terran Republic, a highly centralized oligarchic galactic government which had unconditionally ruled humanity for the past thousand years, discovered a single habitable planet. Not only was this planet suitable for the sustenance of life, but it also already possessed many native, highly developed, and staggeringly familiar flora. The Science Institute named this planet Auraxis. Taking a keen interest in this aberration, the Republic quickly sent expeditions through the wormhole to explore and colonize the planet. Shortly after arriving, the colonists discovered the remains and technology of a lost and ancient alien species - the Vanu (or Ancients). This technology proved to be so complex and powerful as to barely be conceivable to human minds, involving levels of energy previously thought to be physically unquantifiable. This allowed for the quick colonization of the ten continents of Auraxis, the creation of power sources and vehicles for the use of the colonists and, most importantly, it facilitated the development of rebirthing technology. This nanotechnology allowed the Terrans to deconstruct and reconstruct their own bodies, allowing fast transportation across the world. Later on, it was discovered that dead workers could be brought back to life using the technology, revealing a startling new possibility: immortality. Needless to say, the incredible power (and value) of this technology was systemically acknowledged, and despite the enormity of the advances made due to the study of the technology, it was also recognized that humanity had not yet even scratched the surface of any future possibilities. Later on, the discovery that the planet itself had been an artificial construction of the Ancients further served to solidify the realization that, if left unchecked, Vanu technology would forever and irrevocably change humanity and its future.

Shortly after the rebirthing technology was discovered, the wormhole collapsed, cutting the colony off from the Mother Republic and preventing the return of Vanu technology for proper examination. The Republic authorities took measures to hide this fact, while desperately exhausting all theoretical options for re-establishing the traversability of the wormhole. Meanwhile, as widespread usage of the technology grew, the Republic began to fear the potential repercussions of allowing so much power to be shifted so quickly into the hands of so many people. Namely, it feared that the rebirthing technology and the potential impunity to death, disease, and pain it afforded would cause massive philosophical shifts amongst the isolated population, thus pulling out one leg of the tripod that had sustained the Republic for a millennium: that of deterrence. More generally, the military feared that if utilization of the technology continued to spread, that the other two bases might come away as well: a populace armed with practically god-like power would have very little need of a strong authoritarian body to provide structure and purpose to their lives. Based on these trepidations, the Republic began to restrict usage of the new technologies, and halted all further research and development involving the Ancient Tech.

It was too late, however, and their concerns began to materialize earlier than they had expected. As research diminished, so too did hopes of reopening the wormhole. As news of this began to escape the scientific community, general dissension set in. Amongst the populace, a great resultant of the loss of faith in the capability of the Republic (which had always presented itself as infallible) was a split in their loyalties. Two distinct groups emerged: the loyalists and the separatists. The separatists argued that the recent behavior of the Republic was full of obvious knee-jerk moves and over-reactive mistakes. Claiming that the Republic knew its end was at hand, the separatists advocated breaking away and forming a new society, now that their would-be "oppressors" were isolated and without aid. The loyalists countered that the Republic had never been abusive (a claim hotly debated) and had always looked out for its own, and that the Terran people at least owed them continued loyalty on that point alone. Meanwhile, in the intellectual circles and among the scientific establishment, there had long been the feeling that the Republic was ill at-ease with the possibilities of the New Science, and a movement had begun to sequester and conceal as many of the Vanu artifacts as could be feasibly obtained without overt notice.

As the Terran demographic continued to polarize, these movements finally came to fruition as the predecessors of the Vanu Sovereignty made their exodus and took with them the research and artifacts they had managed to stockpile over the Auraxian years. Encouraged by this, the separatists seceded, seizing a number of military stockpiles and procuring a small arsenal of military assets: they called themselves the New Conglomerate. In a backlash to this, the Republic declared these two factions outlawed, announcing their intentions to reunify with them at all costs. Shortly after this, war broke out between the Terrain Republic and the New Conglomerate. Not long after the Vanu Sovereignty was attacked by the New Conglomerate and dragged into the war.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Factions

The Terran Republic (TR) - Red/Black

A conservative, authoritarian, collectivist nation who strive to regain contact with the homeworld and reunite the warring factions. Their leadership is a public oligarchy known as the Overwatch, composed of various representative officials and their associated Ministries, who regulate allotted portions of society in accordance with their own expertise and the collective will towards favourable outcomes. They believe that authority is the bastion that protects humanity and that in a truly free society, with no Big Brother to guide and watch over citizens, misery and suffering would quickly be visited to all. Furthermore, they regard the Vanu technology as dangerous and disruptive, a chaotic force threatening the stability of their righteous order, and only begrudgingly do they utilise it in warfare. Their vision of the future is one of peace restored through their benevolent rule, and humanity reunited by the reopening of the wormhole. They stand by the view that the Vanu went extinct by meddling with power on the orders of magnitude which was to be found in their artifacts and technologies, and they fear groups such as the Sovereignty will drive humanity to a similar fate, causing as much damage to reality as possible along the way. Their ordinance is characterised by its high rate of fire and correspondingly great ammunition consumption.

Main Guns: Mini-Chain Gun (MCG), Striker, Cycler
Faction Vehicles: Prowler, Marauder
Top Outfits: KOTOR/TRx (Spec Ops), KAAOS (Air Division), The Enclave (Spec Ops), Virtual Hitmen (Mass Organization)

The New Conglomerate (NC) - Blue/Yellow

A separatist faction determined to remain free of the controlling and domineering Republic, as well as to liberate the rest of humanity from the Republic, whether or not they share the Conglomerate's theories. Unlike the authoritarian and technocratic TR and VS governments, the NC are fighting for democracy, freedom, and human rights. As a rebel group, their leadership lies with the Revolutionary Command, a visible co-operative of military experts and leaders who direct the liberation efforts as a whole. They feel that any form of control is oppression and that a miserable free man is better off than a contented slave. Consequently, they view the Vanu technology as a potential tool of control, and the Vanu Sovereignty as technocratic tyrants, would-be dictators like the Republic, only under the banner of science and probably much worse. Their view of the future is one of freedom and self-government, where every man elects his own path and flourishes in what ways he sees fit. They rely on ponderous vehicles and slow-firing heavy weaponry, foregoing mobility and tactical flexibility for heavy armour and superior firepower. As their name suggests, the New Conglomerate is a diverse collection of forces that have banded-together (but have little trust of one another): ordinary citizens drawn into the conflict, various rebel groups that were previously autonomous, expatriate Terran and Vanu soldiers, and the Expeditionary Force (“XForce”) of the Royal House of Auraxis (the rightful heirs to the Vanu throne, forced into exile, the sole possessors of a working wormhole). The NC's democratic philosophy is often their achilles heel militarily, as they lack the iron-fisted leadership structure of the TR and VS. From the New Conglomerate's point of view, however, theirs is the only moral and just cause.

The Vanu Sovereignty (VS) - Purple/Green

A loose transhumanist group of academics, intellectuals, and common people who believe that human destiny lies in the further development and exploitation of the alien technology. Their leadership is the clandestine Sovereignty Council, the composition of which is unknown without itself and the existence of which is obscured to those outside the Sovereignty. They see the Republic as pedantic and outmoded, a used-up idea and restriction on the continuing ascendancy of the species through the synthesis of man and machine. They also see the New Conglomerate as a savage, ochlocratic band of thugs who have repackaged old mistakes in new dressings and are desperately afraid of new concepts which they cannot grasp, and the future these promise to the far-sighted. Their view of the future is one of scientific perfection and purity: they believe that the Vanu used the power of their advanced technologies to transcend their physical limitations and the mundane world, ascending to a superior state of being, and ultimately, a higher plane of existence. Scientists and intellectuals through-and-through, they see this path as an enlightened ascension and hold the Ancients up as a shining example for mankind to follow. Hopefully and eagerly they envision humanity imitating this metamorphosis, firstly through the enhancement of the human condition via "hypertech" (foreseeable technological breakthroughs which have not yet quite arrived), and eventually, by the replacement of human beings altogether; from there, not even they can imagine yet. They are most reliant on alien science and technology, and often more than compensate for their shortcomings through the superiority of their engineering, utilising mind-bending physics, high-energy arrays, and other exotic weaponry to defend themselves.

Gameplay

At any one time, the PlanetSide server hosts potentially thousands of players in a variety of landscapes, from the war on foot to the air, across desert, mountains, forests and swamps. The goal is simple: each faction must attempt to capture as many facilities as possible on the surface of the planet while denying them to their enemies. There are many strategies and opportunities that skilled players can utilize in order to direct combat operations. The player controls his or her chosen character from a first-person perspective. This gives combat a more direct role and emphasizes skill.

Character Progression

While a first person shooter at heart, PlanetSide does have an experience/leveling system. Earned experience is divided into three categories: Battle Experience, Support Experience, and Command Experience. Battle Experience is gained from elimination of enemy soldiers, the capture of base facilities, and exploring and interacting with the game world. Support Experience is earned through "Assist" kills: after aiding another player, the first player gains a percentage of experience the other player gains through kills. Command Experience is gained from leading a squad or platoon in a successful base capture. Functionally, Battle Experience and Support Experience are identical, both contributing towards Battle Rank, which leads to benefits such as the ability to use different equipment, implants, or appearance upgrades. Accumulated Command Experience lets the player use several team-oriented abilities. Currently, the maximum Battle Rank is set to 40, while the maximum Command Rank is set to 5. Players who attain Battle Rank 40 are granted every certification in the game.

Most Battle Ranks give you a certification point which can then be spent on certifications, while each Command Rank unlocks a special ability accessed via an item called a "Command Uplink Device (CUD)". Certifications can be used to unlock new weapons or vehicles you can use on the battlefield, thus enhancing a character's flexibility.

Vehicles
PlanetSide contains 38 vehicles, ranging from interceptor aircraft to battle tanks to Battle Frames (introduced with PlanetSide: Aftershock). No one player is able to access all 38 vehicles normally, as many of them are empire-specific meaning that only members of a certain empire can acquire them via a vehicle terminal. Players that have invested certification points in the Hacking tree are able to "jack" enemy vehicles for their own empire's use. Some staple and basic vehicles are available as Common Pool vehicles, meaning that any soldier can acquire them, assuming they have the proper certification to do so. Vehicles play a vital role in PlanetSide, and an experienced pilot or gunner of even one strategic vehicle can often turn the tide of a battle. Although vehicle movements are often more effective when undertaken in groups of 30 or more.

Weapons
As of July 2008, there are 28 weapons available in PlanetSide. Weapons are grouped and accessed the same way as vehicles are — using the empire-specific and common pool accessibility to keep gameplay balanced.

Organization

While a player can experience the game solo, the best way to succeed in PlanetSide is to join a squad. A squad is an ad hoc group of up to ten players led by a squad leader. Two or three squads can form a platoon, for a maximum group of thirty players. Benefits of being in a squad include the sharing of experience (resulting in a speedy rise in Battle Rank) and the results gained from working as a team.

Like most online games, a player can create or join a clan, which is called an Outfit in PlanetSide. Whereas a squad is a temporary group, an outfit persists even if all members are off-line. Outfits are managed through a panel in-game, allowing players to be promoted/demoted. Outfits have eight possible ranks, with the top four being officer ranks, allowing members to invite and kick players to and from the outfit. Outfits can range in membership from two (the minimum number required to form an outfit is ten players) to an infinite number, the largest outfits have over 400 members. Sometimes these large outfits recruit by inviting random players, generally causing the outfit to have a poor reputation. The largest outfits in the history of the game have approached and sometimes exceeded 1000 members. In 2006 an "Outfit Wars" event was launched for competition solely between outfits on each server.

Combat Roles

PlanetSide offers a variety of roles for players to choose from. The certification system allows for a divergence from "Class" systems of other games and lets players customize their role for their own playstyle. Most players will find themselves in a specialized combat role with support.

Why does this community relate to this game?

We play a unique game just as Planetside is one of the most unique games. We built ours, this one is built for us and has a vast amount of things to do. We're all pretty good players away from soccer. We could be the best spec ops outfit in this damn game. With our already existing community, we will meet several other communities (which could potentially keep soccer going too). These Planetside communities are hardcore and pretty expansive. They do a lot of tactical events and usually show up to bases in full force. Even in Planetside 1 TODAY this is true. That is until PS2 beta comes out. I'm going to show a few videos of what the original Planetside was all about before we move on! ENJOY GUYS, KEEP READING! & Yes the graphics suck on Planetside 1. It was made 9 years ago!

PLANETSIDE 2

General Statement
Lets move on to Planetside 2 guys & gals. This game looks to be MASSIVE, LITERALLY. Unlike the original Planetside 2, will be a free to play model. Not a pay to win model! Everything will be full customization. There will be so many more features including night operations, full control over vehicles (like an air-simulator), and classes. With a FTP model, I expect this game to have a huge player base. Which will allow us to farm noobs. Planetside 2 just finished up with Alpha and is now officially in Beta! Beta invites are expected as early as next week. They hope to release the game by the end of the year. That means we only have a short amount of time to prepare!

Here is the very first video SOE released to the public for PS2.

Lore

PlanetSide 2 is a science fiction MMOFPS set approximately 300 years after the discovery of Auraxis, although the chronology of the game universe starts a few years before. After the Earth has nearly come to ruin after being torn apart by war, the world's governments came to a consensus and united under one banner: the world-wide Terran Republic (TR). Some time later a wormhole, one which scientists fail to explain, appears and later disappears without a trace. Ex-President of the Terran Republic, Tom Connery, believes that the wormhole is a sign of existing extraterrestrial life and launches several space expeditions. The first expedition to Moon Belt gives a lead—a figurine of alien nature—giving Connery a reason to start a second expedition further into space. Several Terran Republic ships travel through the wormhole and are stranded for a very long period of time; their situation grows dire. Due to the crew's mental exhaustion and provision limit, strict curfews are applied. Later, a vote is held about the necessity of the measures. The positive vote wins, but only barely. There are nearly as many negative votes. A second vote is called. However, a terrorist bomb destroys the ship on which the vote is to occur, killing everyone aboard, including Connery. Curfews pass. Later, the expedition discovers the planet Auraxis, and exactly 175 years later, the war between the Terran Republic and the New Conglomerate breaks out. Following this, a group of people calling themselves the Vanu Sovereignty join the conflict.

Features
PlanetSide 2 will be a re-imagining of PlanetSide, featuring the same world, factions and taking place at roughly the same time period. As in the previous game, it will feature territory control in an open-world, large battles featuring up to 2000 players on foot or in land/air vehicles. The territory system is more complex than in the original PlanetSide, and will play a bigger part in shaping the battlefield. SOE has been taking into account balance issues from the first game. Matthew Higby, the creative director, has stated "We're definitely going to be rewarding combatants on lower population empires through mechanics such as proportionally increased advancement rates and resources and we'll be attempting to balance the overall empire saturation on each server as much as we can without force-restricting folks from being able to play with their friends."

The pacing is going to be faster than the original PlanetSide. It will feature potentially thousands of players. It will also feature familiar first person shooter elements such as sprinting, iron sights, and regenerating shields. An important aspect will be that player skill is the major determiner when it comes to being able to kill other players. Unlockable Skills are planned to only make between 15-20% difference and any player. The model of obtaining the said skills will be similar to the model of Eve Online, with skill taking time to be learned, however the skill progression will not require a player to be online for its duration. The game will also feature a unique Day/Night cycle, meaning that battles will happen in different times of day, affecting the general methods for warfare.

Classes and Weapons

Another thing the game is taking from the genre is the pre-set classes, with multiple progression trees. The versatility of the original inventory system was replaced with the new class system to provide more team play experience and give player the ability of visual distinction. The game presents 6 classes, each of them possess 2 specializations, and all except MAX have handguns and combat knives:

Light Assault - a jetpack trooper, can deploy his own ammo and is armed with a carbine

Heavy Assault - heavy anti-infantry unit and anti-vehicle unit, can equip their faction's machine gun or anti vehicle weapon

Medic - a class responsible for replenishing players' health and reviving them on the field, armed with a rifle

Engineer - a class responsible for vehicle repairs as well as fortification, and is a handy anti-infantry class with its rifle or shotgun

Infiltrator - a saboteur or a sniper, capable of cloaking, armed with a Sniper Rifle

Mechanized Assault Exo-Suit (MAX) - an operator of the powerful armored robotic suit, capable of sustaining and dealing heavy damage, the only class that will require Engineer's attention along with Medic's

The classes will not be tied to a character, one can switch a class at any given time, by using an equipment terminal on a base or at a mobile spawn point. Skill progression will not be tied to the active class either.

The two assault classes, the medic, and the engineer have access to Assault Rifles and Carbines as standard (presumably SMGs and Shotguns as well), but some weapons are specific to a class, such as the MAX suit weapons, and machine gun and the sniper rifle. All weapons can be outfitted with alternate skins, sights, and functional attachments, as well as themselves be modified to have different traits. These new traits aren't an upgrade, but rather a "sidegrade", where in a straight fight both weapons come out equal. For example, a carbine with high damage and low rate of fire will have the same time-to-kill as a high rate of fire, low damage version and the original.

Vehicles

Over ten vehicles to be utilized, The NS (Nanite Systems) vehicles which are 'common pool' vehicles that any faction can obtain. The NS vehicles consist of the Flash ATV, Galaxy Air Transport, Liberator Bomber, Sunderer APC and the Lightning Light tank/IFV. The remaining vehicles are ES (Empire Specific) meaning only your empire can obtain your faction's airborne or armored vehicles. The Scythe (Vanu Sovereignty), the Reaver (New Conglomerate) and the Mosquito (Terran Republic) are the three Empire Specific fighter jets. The three Empire Specific Armored tanks are the Magrider (Vanu Sovereignty), the Vanguard (New Conglomerate) and the Prowler (Terran Republic). This makes a total of eleven vehicles thus far and more may be added before launch.

Game Engine
The game will use SOE's Forge Light Engine which in turn uses nVidia's PhysX API for its physics engine. This enables more realistic vehicle handling compared to the previous PlanetSide, especially when it comes to flying aircraft. Weather and day/night cycles are also possible as well as volumetric fog and clouds which players can hide in. Bullets are also simulated by the physics engine so players will need to compensate for gravity while aiming.

Another improvement over PlanetSide is the introduction of locational damage (hitboxes) for soldiers and vehicles. This is customisable by the developers so that a sniper rifle shot to the head can have a huge bonus while high rate of fire weapons, such as the Mini Chaingun, and vehicles have small to no bonus.

Territorial Control & Resources

Initially, combat will take part on the continents of Auraxis which are broken up into many territories. Territories are then split into sectors which can be captured by the various empires; later SOE may introduce multiple worlds to fight on. Some sectors are captured by soldiers, while others can be captured by vehicles. Influence from captured sectors can also spread to adjacent sectors. Each sector has resources, such as Auraxium, which are used to purchase vehicles and certain weapons and upgrades (such as one use consumables).[citation needed] It will also feature a player and, possibly, outfit (PlanetSide name for guild/clan) economy.

Mission System

The mission system is partly automated and partly controlled by commanders and outfits. It provides focal points for players to attack and defend and to help players get into the fight a lot quicker.

Roles & Skills

As a player participates in the game they will increase in Battle Rank. This is where the similarity with PlanetSide's system ends. A player trains skills (called certs) to improve their character by granting bonuses and allowing access to more equipment and vehicles. Certs train over time whether the player is online or not (although skill training is quicker when the player is in game). By progressing in Battle Rank a player unlocks the ability to train higher level certs. Some certs require the player to have prerequisite certs, for example to train for a Mechanized Exo-Suit you may first have to train a heavy weapons cert.
There will be class based game play which centre around well known roles such as medic, engineer, etc. You can switch in and out of roles at will but your effectiveness in that role will depend on your certs. It is therefore down to the player whether they become highly specialised in one role, or branch out to be effective in a variety of roles, however at maximum level, you will be able to unlock everything.
Command Rank does not exist in PlanetSide 2, instead there will be command skills which provide bonuses to team members such as allowing the leader to be a mobile spawn point and unlock orbital strikes. Outfits will also have a skill tree which provide bonuses to their members.

Business Model

PlanetSide 2 will be free-to-play. The developers have indicated an admiration of the League of Legends model. It will feature certain free aspects, and will include a cash shop. The cash shop will not sell items such as guns or vehicles that make players more powerful, instead the shop will sell equipment, obtainable through the game progressions and cash shop exclusive things such as visual customization.
