New planet, with life? :O
Discovery of new planet called Kepler-22b was announced today thats twice the size of earth and has habitable conditions only 600 light years away

Re: New planet, with life? :O
1 ly = 9.461*10^15 m
600 ly = 5.677*10^18 m
Fastest Recorded Speed by a Space Shuttle (v) = 11082 m/s
v=d/t
t=d/v
t=5.677*10^18 m/11082 m/s
t=5.122*10^14 s
5.122*10^14 s x 1 m/60 s
8.537*10^12 m x 1 h/60 m
1.423*10^11 h x 1 day/24 h
5928240741 days x 1 year/365.25 days
16230638 years
Some guy calculated one light year as 18,734 years
18734 years x 600 = 11240400,
Which is relatively close to what I got :\. hused a faster speed though, don't know where he got his, got mine at wolframalpha.
Someone else calculated one as 21585 years
21585 years x 600 = 12951000,
Which is closer to mine, kind of. He including acceleration from start (starting from rest) and starting to slow down (negative acceleration) at the half way point, don't know what was his speed he used either and where he got it. I could do this but it is too much work. If I did do this it would probably make it a lot lower and closer to what they got because they would only reach the top velocity like 1/2 or 3/4 way through, and then start slowing down, unless I included changing acceleration which I am not going to do due to being too lazy.
Therefore it would take somewhere around 16230000 years to go there according to my calculations (someone else wanna do this too, because I probably goofed up somewhere). This is assuming we are constantly going to be travelling at the fastest ever recorded space shuttle speed and crash landing at that speed because I'm to lazy to include acceleration and negative acceleration.
Wanna go?

couldn't the planet already be gone though? since it took 600 light years to get here..

^ Technically we are seeing the light emitted from the planet 600 years ago... aka it might not even be there because chewbacca blew it up with his spaceship.m1tch wrote:couldn't the planet already be gone though? since it took 600 light years to get here..

Oh jeez, never even thought of that lol. Watch us in like 100 years make an epic technological discovery and are somehow able to travel 600 ly, only to find out that the planet already went cablooey.
